7 Ways To Stay Organised And Tidy
Let’s be honest, staying organised in life is a never-ending task. For me, it’s more like a lifestyle that I come back to every few weeks after being super busy. At the time it seems almost impossible to think about organising, especially with tonnes of work to complete, deadlines to meet and have a busy social life too.
Trying to stay on top of it all at home as well as at work, used to seem impossible before getting myself into these habits but they’re quick, efficient, and easy to do so even when I’m juggling a bunch of different tasks between home and work they are still achievable.
So if you’re like me and sometimes struggle to find time to stay organised in life, why not try out these simple and easy tips that will help you keep organised? You can do them even through busy periods but also are so easy to add to your daily or weekly routines.
So here are 7 tips on how to stay organised when your schedule is crazy busy...
1. Put things away there and then.
It’s something as simple as putting the hairdryer back into the drawer once you’ve finished with it or tidying all your stationery away at work when you finish taking notes, little things like this can make a big difference. Having a neat and tidy desk at work can help with your progress throughout the day as well as clearing your room of things you are not using currently.
By putting things away there and then after using them helps prevent the items from cluttering up and becoming a much bigger task than it originally could have been. If you can’t put things away there and then, then place them somewhere you won’t forget or will walk past before you leave. One of the items I do this with is my straighteners. They are very hot after I use them and I’m not able to put them back into the drawer right away so instead, I place then on my bedside table so that before I leave the room or before I go to sleep at night, I remember to put them away and keep my space clutter-free.
2. Make a To-Do list on busy days.
I have to admit, my memory isn’t the best, so writing a To-Do list for a busy day really helps me keep organised, stay on track and prevents me forgetting the smaller but important tasks. Not only that but I also feel extra productive when I get to cross off an item, whether this is on my phone or in my diary if I don’t forget it.
It’s also a good idea to add anything that needs restocking for the house to your To-Do list too, whether it be that you noticed there’s only a splash of milk left or going to the loo and realising you need a re-stock of toilet roll very soon, you can then pop to the shop on your way back home and tick it off your list once you’ve restocked!
3. Make your bed when you wake up.
This one may sound small and insignificant but they say that if you make your bed in the morning, you will have already accomplished the first job of the day. It’s a task that is so small and easy that people think is unnecessary but once you’ve done it, it will set you on the right track for the rest of the day.
One task that you did right as you work up will kick start the rest of the day so that at the end the day you will have accomplished lots of tasks.
4. Declutter regularly.
Decluttering is one of the easiest ways to stay tidy and organised. Highly organised people will do this every week but if you feel like this is too frequent or you are too busy then once every 3-4 weeks would be a good too, it’s all down to personal preference and how much time you can dedicate to the task.
Little things such as rubbish on sides or recycling that needs taking outside can be done as part of your daily routine but decluttering your drawers and going through your wardrobe will make the big differences. Try and make a habit of going through your clothes, drawers, cupboards and gathering all the things that you no longer use whether it be old clothes that you don’t like or don’t fit anymore, items you no longer use. All can be donated or recycled or thrown away and don’t have to take up a lot of time, this way you will have a lot more space and can properly organise.
5. Give everything a home.
There are lots of products out there that can help with organisation and storage. You can use them when separating sections of your drawers or labelling your storage spaces. It’s easy to lose something if it doesn’t have a home.
Create easy-to-access storage spaces for the things you use on a weekly or daily basis and don’t let them become cluttered with irrelevant items. Never label a storage space miscellaneous, everything will have a home, you just might have to get creative.
6. Keep your workspace neat and tidy.
If you have your own workspace at home or you work in an office, by keeping this area tidy and decluttered not only does it keep you more organised but also helps you focus throughout the day.
At the start or end of the day, clear your desk of any old papers that are not needed and keep all your most-used stationery in a pen pot or pencil case, that way they are not cluttering the desk.
Put your office supplies in drawers or a desk organiser so that everything is neat and tidy. It creates a much calmer environment for you to work in and clears your head of any distractions you may have. Organize electrical cords in your office by using zip ties to keep cords wrapped. This will prevent them from getting tangled and messy.
7. Use a planner.
Either create one on your phone or buy one you can write pen to paper on if that’s something you prefer. A daily planner will help break down your week and let you see how your week will plan out. Fill it with appointments, meetings, meetups with friends, it’s good to have if you have a lot of commitments or are busy during the week with work.
Check the planner at the end of every day when you get home or before you get settled for the night, that way you can plan for the next day, whether that be by preparing your meals in advance as you have an early shift or sorting the school bags for your kids.
